Juhi Samal, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, is a recent recipient of the COMET™ from the Heersink School of Medicine Immunology Institute for her proposed study, “Immune Cell Sialoglycan Signatures in Ischemic Stroke.”

The UAB Heersink School of Medicine is proud to announce the 2025 Pittman Scholars. This prestigious honor recognizes assistant professors who have held that rank for fewer than five years for their exceptional research achievements and potential for future contributions to their fields. Named after former School of Medicine Dean James A. Pittman Jr., M.D., this award highlights the school's commitment to fostering innovation and excellence in medical research.

The UAB Department of Biomedical Engineering had a prominent presence at the American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions 2024 in November. The department had seven presentations, as well as a student, Yuhua Wei, Ph.D., named a top five finalist for the Melvin L. Marcus Early Career Investigator Award in Basic Cardiovascular Science.

Alan W. Eberhardt, Ph.D., professor and associate chair of Education in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, received the 2025 Robert M. Nerem Education and Mentorship Medal.

The UAB Heersink School of Medicine’s Department of Biomedical Engineering recently showcased its research at the Biomedical Engineering Society’s (BMES) annual meeting, the world’s leading professional society committed to advancing human health and well-being through biomedical and bioengineering innovation. The conference, known for drawing thousands of engineers, researchers, and students from around the globe, provided an opportunity for UAB's faculty, students, and administrators to highlight groundbreaking work and foster connections in the field.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s (UAB) Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (HIIE) celebrated its annual Innovation Awards on October 11, 2024, recognizing outstanding innovators and entrepreneurial achievements. Anath Shalev, M.D., director of the UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center and founder of TIXiMED, was awarded the 2024 Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award, the institute’s highest honor. Shalev's start-up, TIXiMED, recently advanced toward clinical trials after receiving FDA clearance for its novel Type 1 diabetes treatment, TIX100.

UAB Medicine’s Leadership Development Office recognized 16 individuals in its eighth cohort of Institute for Leadership at a graduation ceremony on June 26, 2024.

UAB Medicine’s Leadership Development Office recently recognized 12 individuals in its fourth cohort of Sharing Authentically to Inspire and Lead (SAIL). The spring 2024 graduates received their certificates on April 9.

In the last several years, UAB Medicine and Heersink School of Medicine have worked to bring leadership development to faculty and staff through the UAB Medicine Institute for Leadership and Momentum in Medicine programs.
