Our nephrology training programs cover an extensive range of kidney physiology conditions, diseases, and injury. These programs are led by award-winning attending physicians, scientists, and mentors committed to imparting their passion and expertise to our trainees.
Our nephrologists and faculty are actively involved in training residents, pre- and postdoctoral fellows, and pipeline trainees to cultivate the next generation of renal physicians and scientists.
Clinical Nephrology Fellowships
The Division of Nephrology offers multiple clinical fellowship training programs. These programs include:
Deep South KUH PRIME
Our Deep South Kidney, Urology, and non-Malignant Hematology Premier Research - Interdisciplinary Mentored Education (KUH PRIME) initiative aims to develop an integrated network of pre- and postdoctoral KUH trainees. Building on our successful track record, we create a community of interconnected scholars, uniting training efforts across UAB, Tulane University, and Augusta University.
O'Brien Center Medical Student Research Program
The O'Brien Center offers an 8-10 week mentored summer research experience for first and second-year medical students, funded by a supplemental award from NIDDK.
Predoctoral PhD & MD Research Training in Teams (PROMOTE)
The Predoctoral PhD & MD Research Training in Teams (PROMOTE) program is designed for pre-matriculating MD and PhD students interested in kidney research. This 8-week program takes place during the summer before their advanced education begins and is funded by NIH R25 DK112731.
GAP Year Internship (GAIN)
The Gap Year Research Internships (GAIN) are tailored for recent graduates or soon-to-be graduates holding a bachelor’s or master’s degree. This program is ideal for those who are motivated to pursue graduate or professional degrees within the next 12-18 months but seek additional time to explore their career options.
Kidney, Urology, and Hematology Undergraduate Research Experience (KURE)
The Kidney, Urology, and Hematology undergraduate Research Experience (KURE) is designed for undergraduate students in their final two years who are interested in kidney, urology, and hematology-focused research. This program takes place over the summer, with 8 weeks on campus and a total duration of 12 weeks. It is funded by NIH R25 DK115353, in partnership with NIH U54 DK126087 UAB Childhood Cystic Kidney Disease Core Center (UAB-CCKDCC).
Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program (KDSAP)
Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program (KDSAP) is a student run organization for UAB Undergraduate students interested in participating in kidney-relevant training, service, and development.
UAB Kidney Club
The Kidney Club is an integral component of the UAB Division of Nephrology's science outreach and community engagement initiatives. Nephrology clinicians and research scientists will visit classrooms to discuss their research, clinical experiences, and career journeys in science. Select students with a keen interest in the field will have the chance to join the UAB CORD program and participate in summer research at one of our Division's biomedical research laboratories.
