Town Hall

Our chief residents lead an open discussion called “Town Hall” during noon conference every eight weeks as an opportunity to bring up any concerns and ideas for improvement within the program. The program has addressed and continues to work on actions of all sizes to help enhance our wellness. We have listed just a few examples of changes made over the past few years based directly on resident feedback:

  • Night Call system established for CCU, MICU and VA-ICU
  • Changes in rounding times and timing of formal didactics in MICU
  • Portable phones purchased for Medicine ward teams to improve efficiency during rounds
  • Surface Pro purchased for each Medicine ward team to look up labs and imaging and place orders on rounds
  • Significant revision of resident journal club both at UAB and the VA
  • Two new ultrasound machines specifically purchased for Internal Medicine resident use
  • POCUS (Point of Care Ultrasound) curriculum development
  • Deliberate procedural acquisition on Inpatient Block rotation
  • Additions to Resident lounge including: massage chair, new computers, refrigerator with water and soft drinks
  • Keurig machine in resident lounge at UAB and at VA
  • Free food for residents on night call at UAB and VA
  • A “mini-fellowship” experience for residents rotating on Pulmonary consults
