Our primary teaching hospitals are Baptist Medical Center South, a licensed, 454-bed, acute care regional referral center and Montgomery’s largest healthcare facility; Baptist Medical Center East, a licensed, 150-bed, acute care hospital with an award winning range of healthcare services including state-of-the-art Labor and Delivery center; and Vaughan Regional Medical Center, a 175-bed accredited facility serving the Dallas County community with more than 75 physicians and 22 specialties. We’re also affiliated with 8 hospitals and clinics across the region, including the new Montgomery UAB Multispecialty Clinic, a joint venture of Baptist Health and UAB Medicine.

Baptist Medical Center South
During the first year of residency, PGY-1’s will train as members of the inpatient medicine team, along side UAB Internal Medicine Residents. The site for this training is the Baptist Medical Center – South, a 492 Bed Regional Referral Center that has served the Montgomery Community since 1963. Baptist Medical Center South serves as a primary training site for the UAB Montgomery Psychiatry Residency; the UAB Montgomery Internal Medicine Residency; the Baptist Health Family Medicine Residency and secondary training site for emergency medicine and surgical residents. Thus site is also the homebase for the PGY-1 rotation in in-patient neurology.
Inpatient
Crossbridge Behavioral Health
During the first year of residency, PGY-1’s will enjoy longitudinal placement on the inpatient psychiatry floors of wither Crossbridge Behavioral Health or the Carastar Crisis Center. Crossbridge is a 60-bed facility with units dedicated to adult, geriatric and adolescent patients. Crossbridge also oversees Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP) for adolescents and adults, and these IOP programs work closely with Dr. Rutland’s and Dr. Gibson’s outpatient clinics.
Carastar Crisis Center
Carastar Crisis Center is a part of the Carastar network of Montgomery’s Public Mental Health Authority. Opened in March of 2023, the Crisis Center has 10 observation beds, where patients can spend up to 23 hours, and 18 beds where patients can stay fo up to seven days. The Center serves the community as a standalone stabilization unit and Psychiatric Emergency step-down unit.
In Addition to the Crisis Center, Carastar also provides outpatient care and therapeutic resources through community clinics spread throughout the River Region.
Emergency
Baptist Behavioral Health
During the first year of residency, PGY-1’s will have the opportunity to work closely with Dr. Gibson and his outpatient child and adolescent clinic based at Baptist Behavioral Health. This clinic works seamlessly with the Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Therapy site and the Crossbridge Behavioral Health Adolescent in-patient until where trainees will provide in-patient care.
During the third year of residenct, PGY-3’s will have the opportunity for a year-long outpatient clinical placement in Baptist Health Care’s outpatient behavioral health clinic. Dr. Rutland is the primary attending in this clinic and will work along side the PGY-3 trainee, covering general psychiatry, addiction and adolescent outpatient cases.
