The Division of Emergency Medicine (EM) offers Global Health EM fellowship initiatives, training in point-of-care ultrasound use, and a residency track in Global Health. These initiatives have funded academic fellowships, established a refugee health clinic, and informed curricula for national and international trainees.
Faculty of the UAB School of Public Health, Sparkman Center of Global Health, and the Heersink School of Medicine are conducting research and global health practice initiatives in women’s and children’s health and HIV prevention and treatment in collaboration with the Kenya Medical Research Institute, Aga Khan University-Nairobi, Moi University, AMPATH-Kenya, and the Nashulai Conservancy in Masai Mara.
Current research includes a randomized trial of an intervention to promote the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in pregnant couples, assessment of the impact of stigma on breast cancer patients, integration of novel HIV prevention products into reproductive health services, a pharmacovigilance project among pregnant persons, including those living with HIV, to examine drug exposures and adverse pregnancy outcomes, a mixed methods study using injectable HIV treatment and long-acting family planning among adolescent girls and young women, and the development of interventions to address mental health among pregnant and postpartum women living with HIV. Collaboration with the Nashulai Conservancy includes opportunities for UAB students to complete internships and collaborate on Global Health Case Competitions. Multiple UAB graduate students and other trainees have been and continue to be involved in research and practice projects in Kenya with these partners.
