Drs. Agatha Ambrozy and Alex HannaThe Department of Family and Community Medicine would like to welcome our newly matched fellows, Agatha Ambrozy, D.O., and Alex Hanna, M.D. These family medicine physicians will join our UAB-Cahaba Sports and Exercise Medicine Fellowship, starting in July.

This ACGME-accredited fellowship combines comprehensive sports medicine training with special devotion to exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle medicine. Within the two-year program, our fellows will become experts in all domains of sports medicine, including sports cardiology, ultrasound, comprehensive concussion management, exercise as medicine, and much more.

In addition to their CAQ in Sports Medicine, our incoming fellows will earn a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition degree. This supplemental program provides additional expertise in exercise prescriptions, nutritional assessment/recommendations, and motivational tools for behavior change. Fellows will have the opportunity to earn their certification as a Registered Musculoskeletal sonographer (RMSK) prior to graduation.

UAB’s Sports and Exercise Medicine Fellows get the opportunity to work directly with athletes at every level, from youth sports to UAB student-athletes to some of Birmingham’s most competitive professional teams, as the UAB Sports and Exercise Medicine program provides on and off-field care for the Birmingham Legion FC, Birmingham Bulls Hockey, Birmingham Vulcans Rugby, and others.

"I can confidently speak for our entire department when I say that we are ecstatic to welcome Drs. Ambrozy and Hanna to our team,” says Assistant Professor and Program Director, Ian McKeag, M.D. “They are both coming from outstanding family medicine programs and have put in some extraordinary work to separate themselves from their peers. They are going to be outstanding additions to our team and I have no doubt that they will continue their steep trajectories of success as representatives of UAB."

Dr. Ambrozy completed her medical education at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, and her undergraduate education at SUNY Binghamton in 2016. She was a Division I tennis athlete on scholarship, taking her to the American East Tournament semifinals her senior year. She is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Academy of Family Physicians, and American Medical Association. Dr. Ambrozy will be coming to Birmingham from Greenville, North Carolina as a part of the ECU Health Family Medicine Residency.

Dr. Hanna is an alumnus of Loyola University Chicago – Stritch School of Medicine, where he graduated in 2021. He is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Academy of Family Physicians, Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians, and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Dr. Hanna is current Chief Resident at the University of Wisconsin Family Medicine Residency program, assisting in team coverage for the University of Wisconsin football program and Verona Area High School athletics, providing sideline coverage and conducting pre-participation exams in a multi-disciplinary setting.

The new fellows will join current fellows Mark Carrasco, M.D., and Chris Grijalba, D.O., and the UAB Sports and Exercise Medicine program this summer. Learn more about their work and the Sports and Exercise Medicine Fellowship here.
