On Aug. 1, five new faculty members joined the Department of Family and Community Medicine.

Courtney Conklin, M.D. will join as a family medicine and sports medicine physician. Conklin comes to UAB from the University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences, where she was a sports medicine fellow. She earned her medical degree from American University of the Caribbean and completed her residency in the Virginia Commonwealth University Riverside Family Medicine Residency program.

Daniel Fijabi, M.D. will join as a family medicine physician. Fijabi comes to UAB from the Cahaba-UAB Family Medicine Residency program affiliated with our department, where he completed the Urban Track based out of Cahaba Medical Care’s West End location in Birmingham. Fijabi earned his medical degree in Nigeria at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology College of Health Sciences.

Taylor Lahasky, M.D. will join as a family medicine physician. She comes to UAB from Wake Forst University School of Medicine, where she recently completed her family medicine residency. Lahasky earned her medical degree from the LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport.

Matt Miesch, M.D. will join as a family medicine and sports medicine physician. Miesch has already been with the department for two years as a UAB Sports and Exercise Medicine fellow and completed that two-year program in July. Miesch completed his family medicine residency at the University of Connecticut and earned his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine.

Carmela Ver, M.D. will join as a family medicine physician. She comes to UABfrom Olsmted Medical Center in Minnesota, where she practiced for two years after completing her family medicine residency with Carolinas Medical Center. She earned her medical degree from UT Health San Antonio.

Another new faculty member will join on Sept. 1.

Joseph Coppiano, M.D. is a family medicine and sports medicine physician. Coppiano recently completed the UCLA Sports Medicine Fellowship, and completed his family medicine residency at the Medical College of Georgia.

The six new faculty members represent an exciting period of growth for the department, and for family medicine and sports medicine at UAB.

“We are so excited to have each of these talented physicians on our team, and to be able to expand our clinical, educational and research offerings with their expertise and leadership,” said Irfan Asif, M.D., department chair, associate dean for primary care and rural health and director of the UAB primary care service line. “Primary care services are in huge demand at UAB and hiring and retaining excellent providers is crucial to meeting that need, and to fulfilling our mission as the region’s top academic medical center.”
