Program Requirements
- Thoughtful, comprehensive dermatological care of clinic and consult patients with attention to quality patient-doctor interaction, cost reduction, patient education, timely follow-up of biopsies and labs and correspondence with referring providers.
- Acquisition of knowledge of basic science of the skin, immunodermatology and clinical dermatology through the completion of assigned reading material and active participation in clinics, conferences and consults.
- Development of dermatological surgical skills through active participation during Mohs surgery rotations, and VA surgery rotations.
- Attainment of detailed analysis and diagnosis of dermatopathology specimens through weekly dermatopathology conferences, assigned dermatopathology readings and dermatopathology rotations.
- Involvement in academic endeavors including clinical studies, publications, public service and presentations at state and national meetings.
- Creative pursuit of additional dermatological skills and knowledge.
- Teaching of nurses, medical students, rotating physicians and dermatology residents.
- Assistance with the administration of residency and departmental schedules.
Didactics
Didactics are held every morning in-person from 7:00-8:00 a.m. Each week, residents participate in sessions dedicated to dermatopathology, kodachromes, and rotating textbook chapters. This year, our residents are studying Andrews and Wolverton. Each Wednesday, a faculty member within the department, UAB Medicine, or from the community leads a talk on topics ranging from dermoscopy and health disparities to immunocompromised dermatology and skin of color. This year, we dedicated the first eight weeks of the academic year to a "boot camp" for our PGY2 residents where we covered a number of "how to" topics ranging from skin checks, billing, and biopsies to wound care and suturing.
Grand Rounds are held every Tuesday at noon except when it is replaced by Journal Club on the first Tuesday of the month. Each month there is also a lunch and learn CME lecture.
