Program Mission
The goal of the Liver Transplant fellowship is to provide our fellow with broad clinical experiences and research opportunities to develop expertise in the management of transplant patients throughout the perioperative period and serve as a leader on the transplant teams.
Program Aims
- Provide clinical training that will equip our fellow to become a specialist in the field of translplant anesthesia.
- Promote scholarly activity through ample research opportunities.
- Foster continuing education by providing departmental grand rounds, continuous quality improvement conferences and transplant lecture series.
Program Overview
The fellowship, which is non-ACGME accredited, consists of 12 months of post-residency training devoted to liver transplant anesthesia. It incorporates clinical training, research, and education centered around liver transplant anesthesia. Our program consists of 4 transplant anesthesiologists and 10 transplant surgeons with expertise in the perioperative care of liver transplantation patients. Our team has completed over 20 heart transplants, 5 heart/lung transplants, over 275 kidney and kidney/pancreas transplants, 83 liver transplants and 25 lung transplants. In 2022 alone, UAB's Comprehensive Transplant Institute has completed over 420 transplants.
