The UAB research landscape is changing. On March 20, 2024, UAB President Ray Watts shared an update on planning for the Research Strategic Initiative: Growth with Purpose. The Research Strategic Initiative maps the way to reach $1 billion in research funding. With this initiative will come improvements to the technical infrastructure: new electronic research systems and expanded utilization of current systems. Part of this improved infrastructure includes a focus on the OnCore Clinical Trials Management System (CTMS) for industry-sponsored clinical trials.OnCore is a web-based enterprise-wide CTMS that integrates multiple functions including protocol administration, participant tracking, and sponsor invoicing. OnCore CTMS aligns with the UAB electronic medical record system to reduce redundancy across the enterprise and to enhance patient safety and research billing compliance. OnCore has been successfully implemented in multi-disciplinary institutions, including Emory University, Yale University, MD Anderson, the University of Wisconsin, the University of California San Francisco, and many other academic medical centers. This large network of users provides extensive support and collaboration on best practices and most efficient use of the system.
At UAB, OnCore is required for all industry-sponsored clinical trials, as well as any research study that involves UAB Health System clinical billable services or applicable CCTS services. As part of the Research Strategic Initiative, required utilization of the OnCore Financials Console for industry-sponsored clinical trials is a recent addition to the minimum footprint. This requirement aims to standardize clinical research financial workflows, increase efficiencies for managing study budgets and invoicing study sponsors, and allow for financial reporting to UAB Senior Leadership.
