This program provides research staff (study coordinators, billing staff, regulatory coordinators, etc.) with the basics of implementing and managing a clinical study or trial with an emphasis on good clinical practices (GCPs), research compliance, and other key topics. It is recommended for people who are starting out in research careers or those who would like to receive updates on the various UAB departments and programs that are on campus. This program will provide total of 22.5 AMAPRA CME Credits to the participants. Registration required by August 13, $150.

Congratulations to Surya Bhatt, MD, CCTS KL2 Scholar, CTSTP Alumni, Associate Professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, for becoming the latest recipient of the UAB School of Medicine's Featured Discovery. His work highlights the remarkable advancements that Dr. Bhatt and other researchers are making to translate scientific findings from the bench to the bedside at a rapid speed (with thanks to reporting from Brit Blalock).

The most critical step for success is having a well formulated idea that improves knowledge in an industry category AND moves your science forward. Drs. Jason Nichols (UAB) and Rodney Rocconi (USA) highlighted the goals, disclaimers and caveats of investigator-initiated trials (IIT), as well as shared their personal successes, failures and lessons learned. They provide great examples of available collaborative resources including the CCTS SHARe consortium and Trail Innovation Network. Are you a full-time investigator at a CCTS Partner Network institution with a project that explores scientific questions of import to the health of communities in AL, MS, and/or LA? Do you research health disparities, health outcomes, or health challenges across the life course? Are you involved in community-engaged research, population health studies, or clinical trial recruitment innovation? If so, consider applying for a CCTS 2020 pilot award. Pre-applications are due August 14, 2019, 5pm CDT (we strongly encourage applicants to read the entire RFA prior to beginning the application process).

The purpose of the LEAD program is to build a pipeline of future leaders within UAB, the CCTS Hub. Co-Sponsored by CCTS and Scientific Community of Outcomes Researchers (SCOR), LEAD is focused on developing the fundamental competencies within junior faculty and staff who are in leadership roles or will be in leadership roles soon. Apply by August 15.

Auburn University announces a new graduate cancer course in biology and genetics Fall 2019 (VBMS 7970). CCTS Partner Network members are eligible to enroll. Classes will be available via Zoom to allow transient students to participate.

Congratulations to our new cohort of KL2 Scholars, whose appointments became official on June 1, 2019. They represent a variety of disciplines including surgery, preventive medicine, oncology, and hematology. Selected through a rigorous competitive process, KL2 scholars receive clinical and translational science development support for two years.

CCTS Training Academy hosts a four-week lecture series on translational research every Wednesday, 8:30-10:30am, in July. Our expert speakers introduce translational research to investigators: from translating your question into a project, project/team management, research methods to preparing a scientific abstract and writing your research.

The CCTS family is sad to relay the passing of Jay McDonald, MD, professor emeritus and former chair of the Department of Pathology, on June 5. In addition to his pivotal contributions to establish the Center, Dr. McDonald wascentral in shaping and implementing the CCTS training program, as well as originated the idea of the CCTS Nascent Project Panels, which he led for two years. A celebration of Dr. McDonald's life hosted by the Department of Pathology will take place on July 18, 2019, 4-6pm at the UAB Alumni House. RSVP is required.

Come celebrate our recent five-year grant renewal and hear about our many initiatives in support of clinical and translational science including funding opportunities, research fellowships, clinical research support, and community engagement. 

Lawrence A. Tabak, DDS, PhD, gave the 2019 Marchase Endowed Lecture at UAB, the CCTS Hub, and shared words of wisdom he learned in his career. Dr. Tabak is the Principal Deputy Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Deputy Ethics Counselor of the Agency.

OnCore resources can now be found on the CCTS website under the Research Commons domain. CCTS played a lead role in the implementation of the OnCore Enterprise clinical trials management system (CTMS) at UAB. Here you have access to support, latest updates, calendar services, trainings, and FAQs. For-profit companies, such as the pharmaceutical industry, support research at academic health centers in several ways. In one model, physician-scientists pitch the study design and industry funds the study conduct. These Investigator-Initiated Trials (IITs) seek to improve or expand existing, approved therapies to address unmet or undermet health needs. Join us, this Wednesday, July 10, 4-5:30pm to understand the various models of industry-supported clinical trials, recognize the advantages and potential challenges of industry-supported IITS, and hear from Drs. Jason Nichols and Rodney Rocconi's successes, failures and lessons learned.
