The College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office announces funds for grants to full-time faculty seeking to “pivot” to a new direction in their teaching, research, scholarship, or creative activity.
Eligibility
- Full-time faculty in UAB College of Arts and Sciences
Funding
- Individual grants in amounts of up to $10,000 will be funded. Funding requests should be consistent with the disciplinary area. In some disciplines, awards of less than $10,000 are anticipated.
- Funding is awarded based on potential impact of the funds to accelerate and/or expand the faculty member’s research, scholarship, or creative activity.
- Funding may be used for all UAB-approved costs, with the following exceptions:
- Course release is not eligible for funding
- Travel only to attend or present work at scholarly academic conferences is not generally funded. Exceptions will be considered for faculty to attend specialty conferences or workshops that represent a clear opportunity for new training or learning.
- Priority areas for funding include:
- Activities that lead to scholarly productivity and promotion from the Associate Professor to Professor rank
- Activities that introduce the faculty member to new subfields, new areas of knowledge, or new scholarly opportunities and that propel the faculty member to productive research, scholarship, or creative work
Deadlines and Requirements
- Proposals for funding are due by Friday, November 15, 2024. They should include:
- A basic cover sheet with a signature from the department chair approving the proposal
- A 500-1000 word description of the research, scholarship, creative project or teaching enhancement project, including:
- How the proposed work represents a “pivot” to a new area of research or scholarship for the researcher
- References, which may be included if appropriate but are not included in word limit
- Indication of how this funding will lead to a substantive outcome such as an article, book chapter, book, creative work, new course, and/or additional funding
- Brief timeline for proposed activities (can be in textual, tabular, or graphic form and not included in word limit)
- Budget (can be in textual, tabular or spreadsheet form and not included in word limit)
- Funds must be spent between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025
- A final written report on the funded project, indicating outcomes and budgetary expenditures must be submitted to the Dean’s office by September 15, 2026

Awards
The CAS Dean’s Office will implement a competitive review process with the intention of awarding about three grants per year.
