Tim McKenzie, EdS, spent his teaching career in middle school mathematics and he brings this unique perspective with him to the UABTeach program. During his tenure at Irondale Middle School, Tim taught 6th grade and 8th grade mathematics and also served as the school-wide mathematics coach. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Tim was a member of the Continuous Improvement Leadership Team, Jefferson County Math Curriculum Committee, and was named the 2011 2nd Mile Teacher. He also served as a Math Support Teacher with the Greater Birmingham Math Partnership. Tim most recently taught 7th grade mathematics at Helena Middle School, where he was also a participant of the Shelby County Technology Academy and Cross Country coach (County Champs boys (undefeated) and girls).
Tim earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Elementary Education from UAB (go Blazers!) and is proud to be returning back home to his alma mater to teach the next generation of teachers. Tim continued his postgraduate education at the University of Montevallo where he earned an Education Specialist degree in Teacher Leadership. In 2015 Tim received the University of Montevallo Outstanding Graduate Student award for the Education Specialist program.
Tim and his wife Mary have been married for six years and have two beautiful fur-babies, Gracie and Darby. They love the great outdoors and spend their spare time hiking, camping, running, and growing their own organic vegetables. Tim is also an avid long distance runner and completed his first ultra marathon (only 29 miles) in 2015!
