This course in health informatics is offered through a partnership with the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and is part of the association’s 10x10 continuing education program. This course can also be used to fulfill one of the course requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Informatics or the Master of Science in Health Informatics program. It is designed for people relatively new to health informatics and provides an overview of key topics in the field.

Format
This course is offered completely online, but students may opt to participate in an in-person session held in conjunction with the AMIA Annual Symposium held in the fall. The course takes 11 weeks to complete.

Schedule
This course is usually offered in the fall and spring with the optional in-person session offered in the fall. The spring 2018 course is now closed for registration. Registration for the fall 2018 course will open in the summer of 2018 and the course will begin at the end of August.

How to Earn Credits Toward a Master’s Degree
Individuals interested in extending their informatics knowledge and skills beyond this course should consider enrolling in the certificate in clinical informatics and the MS in Health Informatics (MSHI) degree program. Students who complete the 10x10 course may qualify to have the equivalent course waived during the first term of the MSHI degree program, upon acceptance into the program and completion of program requirements. How the Course was Developed
This clinical informatics continuing education course was developed through a partnership between UAB’s Department of Health Services Administration and the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). The course is based on a master’s level course that is part of the MS in Health Informatics program, which received recognition by Quality Matters, a faculty-centered, peer-review process that is designed to certify the quality of online courses.

The AMIA 10x10 program was developed to provide education in health IT and informatics for health care professionals who work directly within this field or whose jobs are impacted by health IT and informatics. This is an overview course, making it ideal for physicians, nurses, administrative staff, and other healthcare professionals who want to understand the role of informatics in healthcare delivery. Students are not required to have any experience in health IT prior to taking the courses.
