Members of the UAB community vaccinated through UAB can obtain an optional digital COVID vaccination card created by UAB Information Technology through the UAB mobile app or the my.uab.edu portal.
A secure system verifies vaccination status through UAB’s HIPAA-compliant records and adds the digital card to the user’s smartphone in Apple Wallet or via WalletPasses on Android devices. Individuals who did not receive their vaccine at UAB cannot access this digital card yet, although that may change as the system evolves.
At this time, COVID vaccinations are not required for students, faculty or staff to access campus, and this optional digital COVID vaccination card should not be required to participate in UAB educational or work activities or UAB-sponsored events.
If a member of the UAB community is asked to verify proof of vaccination, they are asked to notify Human Resources.
The UAB digital vaccination card is not a replacement for the paper vaccination card individuals receive at the time of their shot(s). UAB asks vaccinated individuals to keep their paper card in a safe place and take a photo of it in addition to securing the optional UAB digital version.
“This is an added convenience for interested members of the UAB community but not a requirement,” said UAB Chief Information Officer Curt Carver. “UAB IT saw an opportunity to create this courtesy offering that allows members of the UAB community an opportunity to easily capture an additional layer of proof of COVID vaccination.”
“These safe and effective vaccines are our strongest weapon against the spread of COVID-19, and we strongly encourage anyone eligible to get vaccinated as soon as possible,” said UAB Vice President for Clinical Operations Sarah Nafziger, M.D., who has led UAB Employee Health throughout the pandemic. “If at any point in the future COVID vaccines become mandatory — which is not planned at this time — this digital card will be helpful, but at this time it is only an optional convenience.”
