For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Wellscreens will return to campus with in-person appointments. The annual initiative from UAB Employee Wellness provides a free, 15-minute health screening to all benefit-eligible UAB, UAB Hospital, UAB LLC, UAB Health System/UA Health Services Foundation and Cooper Green employees. Screening dates are Aug. 1-Dec. 14 in nine university and hospital locations across campus, and registration is now open.
Now in partnership with Live HealthSmart Alabama, UAB’s inaugural Grand Challenge winner, Wellscreens measure blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, blood sugar, BMI, triglycerides and cholesterol/HDL ratio, giving participants a snapshot of their overall health status. Participants will receive their results at the end of their appointment, and also will be able to access within the My Health Rewards portal 10-14 days following the screening.
“We’re excited to be partnering with Live HealthSmart Alabama to bring back our in-person Wellscreens for the first time since 2020,” said Michael Boyd, executive director for UAB Benefits and Wellness.
The on-site appointments, he continued, “are an opportunity for employees to know their numbers and take steps to improve their health.”

Eligible employees enrolled in a 2022 medical plan can earn up to $350 a year through the My Health Rewards program. Participants accumulate points for completing healthy activities and behaviors such as age/gender-specific screenings, care-management programs, teeth cleanings and a Wellscreens visit, to reach tiers valued at $50, $150 and $350.
Employees who are unable to schedule a Wellscreens visit or have already had lab work taken after Jan. 1 that meets the requested metrics can earn points toward their My Health Rewards incentive by having a health care provider complete and return a Wellscreens Physician Fax Form, available online, by Dec. 31.
“Employees have multiple opportunities from now until December to know their numbers, free of charge,” Boyd said.
Participants are encouraged to register early to ensure a Wellscreens appointment in the location, day and time that works with their schedule. To register or for more information, visit uab.edu/wellscreens.
