The Department of Health and Human Services recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week. Can you meet that goal? Get your steps in with Employee Wellness this month during WALKtober, a monthlong initiative encouraging UAB employees to increase their activity during the workday, hosted in partnership with University Recreation and Live HealthSmart Alabama.
Each Wednesday in October, join Walk with Wellness meetings on the UAB Walking Trails. Stop by anytime from 11 a.m.-noon for 15-minute group walk-alongs; start times will be staggered, and social distancing will be enforced.
“The benefits of regular physical activity are well-known, but many of us encounter barriers that keep us from moving regularly,” said Riley Thornton, Employee Wellness manager. “During the first ever WALKtober at UAB, we hope to bring fun and encouraging events to get UAB employees out and active.”
Join during one or more of the scheduled walks; visit the Campus Calendar listing for information on meet-up locations:
- Oct. 6 on the Arts Trail

Employees also can access the Campus Recreation Center at no cost from Oct. 25-31 to walk the indoor track or use a treadmill; visit uab.edu/urec to learn more.
Virtual and in-person WALKtober participants can earn 50 points in My Health Rewards, and motivating Spotify playlists also are online.
