Fifteen UAB Honors College students gifted a combined 63 hours of service in Fultondale, Alabama, following the tornado that destroyed homes and businesses in the community Jan. 26. They sorted through donated items at the Gardendale Civic Center, prepared items for pick-up and worked the drive-thru line for distribution to residents.
The student volunteer group was led by Gardendale resident and freshman social work major Lexie Thomas, who coordinated the project, organized transportation and accounted for student attendance.
“I had a wonderful experience, met new Honors College students and got to serve the community during a tragedy,” Thomas said.
