Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration Allen Bolton has announced he will retire from UAB effective Jan. 1, 2021. Bolton is a graduate of UAB and worked for the institution for more than 25 years during multiple stints.
President Ray Watts says Bolton is a trusted and respected leader across campus.
“Allen is extremely smart and talented, and he continues to give it his all every day in service to UAB,” Watts said. “We will miss his expertise, candor and friendship greatly, but there is no doubt he earned a great retirement and more time with his family after decades of service to UAB. Allen has served our students, faculty, staff and community with excellence and dedication, and we wish him the best in the future. He will continue to be a valuable member of our leadership team throughout the remainder of 2020.”
Bolton arrived at UAB in 1987 as a graduate student and was hired by the institution prior to his graduation. At UAB, Bolton served as deputy director of the Injury Control Research Center, director of community affairs for the Comprehensive Cancer Center, executive administrator of the Cancer Center, senior associate dean for finance and administration in the School of Medicine and SVP. UAB recruited him back to Birmingham twice, once from Parkland Hospital and once from the Medical College of Wisconsin.
“The chances to be recruited back to UAB were unexpected and rewarding, and it has been an honor to serve this institution and its wonderful people,” Bolton said. “I have been blessed by good mentors and good opportunities, and it has resulted in a great career and many friends who I look forward to seeing at Blazer football and basketball games.”
A national search will be launched to identify Bolton’s replacement.
“Our teams that work in finance, administration, campus safety and facilities are outstanding and will continue to serve the UAB community in full force throughout any transitions,” Watts said.
