From traveling to Antarctica to publishing children’s books, from taking biology educational tools to India to planting pollinator gardens on campus, women have been integral to helping bring UAB’s medical and academic prowess to the national and international forefront throughout its 50-year history. As part of its annual coverage of Women’s History Month, the UAB Reporter has gathered examples of its more recent coverage of women at UAB.

Virginia Sisiopiku, Ph.D., who was named the Engineering Council of Birmingham Educator of the Year in 2018 — was the first member of UAB’s faculty to receive the award. But according to her, the best reward is being able to change the lives of her students. -

Art therapy helps liberate emotions when words fail
Only 12 art therapists in Alabama are credentialed, and UAB is home to two of those — EACC Counselor Carrie Ezell, Ph.D., and Christianne Strang, Ph.D., a neurobiologist. The unique method of counseling enables people to translate their emotions into physical shapes — a process called sublimation — through exercises such as drawing, painting and sculpture. -
Amsler is passionate about a place where penguins outnumber people
Benthic ecologist Maggie Amsler, Ph.D., has traveled to Antarctica 27 times — she's there now with a team from from UAB on a 16-week expedition as a research associate at Palmer Station — studying krill, chemical ecology and ocean acidification, learning more about herself and the continent along the way. -
Raut takes cutting-edge education technology to India, Peru
Biology’s Sami Raut, Ph.D., turned a teaching fellowship into an international STEM outreach initiative, taking cutting-edge education technology and evidence-based teaching practices to colleges in Nagpur, India. -
Kharlampieva honored for contributions to research, entrepreneurship
Eugenia Kharlampieva, Ph.D., was honored by the Bill L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship as 2018’s Faculty Innovator of the Year. -
2 CAS researchers build interdisciplinary teams to tackle big issues in their field
Magda Szaflarski, Ph.D., and Zina Trost, Ph.D., each received $30,000 from the College of Arts and Sciences to build interdisciplinary teams to find answers to big questions about health care and clinician training.

Pollinator garden puts the ‘bee’ in UAB
Campus is now friendlier to pollinators — such as some species of bees, birds and butterflies — after the installation of a new pollinator garden at the UAB Mini Park. Senior biology major Sarah Glover spearheaded the project, which was developed through the UAB Sustainability Investment Fund. -

Erdmann and Raut help save students $1.1 million on course materials
By creating online assets in Canvas, using rental textbooks or older editions and seeking out free online resources, 17 UAB faculty, powered by AIM grants, including Mitzy Erdmann, Ph.D., and Sami Raut, Ph.D., have saved students more than $1.1 million on instructional materials. -
