A trip to the grocery store doesn’t just mean a cart full of food products. There’s also toilet paper, deodorant, cleaning supplies and more, and for those who are food-insecure, those costs be prohibitive.
To offer a helping hand to students and employees, the UAB Staff Council and the Benevolent Fund will collect toiletries Oct. 1-31 as part of the annual Blazer Kitchen Toiletry Drive, which stocks the on-campus food bank with personal hygiene items that also may be needed by patrons.
“Items such as toothbrushes and toothpaste are obviously necessities, but don’t often come to mind when people think of items to donate to the Blazer Kitchen," said Dave Beeching, chair of the Staff Council. “We hope the UAB community can come together to really help make a difference in the lives of our fellow Blazers who are in need.”
Donations can be given to Staff Council representatives. During this drive, the Blazer Kitchen hopes to acquire specific items:
- Feminine hygiene products
- Toilet paper
- Soap
- Shampoo
- Deodorant
- Toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss
- Cotton swabs
- Shaving cream and razors
- Dishwashing liquid
- Laundry detergent
- Paper towels
- Household cleaners
- Reusable cloth shopping bags
The Blazer Kitchen has provided more than 85,493 meals to more than 285 students and 383 employees since it opened in March 2017 in UAB Medical Towers Suite 100.
