Two from UAB are among the speakers for the TEDxBirmingham Salon, which will explore ideas about poverty in Birmingham on Dec. 8 at Trim Tab Brewing.
Associate Professor Stefan Kertesz, M.D., who directs a special primary care clinic for homeless veterans at the Birmingham VA Medical Center, will deliver a talk tentatively titled, "We don't need heroes to be helpful."
UAB medical student Ynhi Thai, who has a master’s degree in medical anthropology from the University of Oxford, will discuss the ways that assumptions about the medically indigent hurt us all. Thai is a co-founder of Rethink Coverage, a nonprofit organization that captures and shares the stories of Alabama residents in the Medicaid Gap who struggle to obtain quality health care.
A limited number of tickets will be available beginning noon Monday, Nov. 24. Tickets are $10 and include a TEDxBirminghamSalon T-shirt (while supplies last).
The Dec. 8 "Ripples" event is one of the quarterly presentations produced by the TEDx organizers. The main event — TEDxBirmingham 2015 Move Mountains — will be held Feb. 28, 2015, in UAB's Alys Stephens Center. Seats are limited, and ticket applications are open through Dec. 31.
