University of Alabama at BirminghamLisa McCormick, DrPHLisa C. McCormick, DrPH Provost and Senior Vice President Janet Woodruff-Borden, Ph.D., has named Lisa C. McCormick, DrPH, interim dean of the UAB School of Public Health, effective Oct. 1. Paul Erwin, M.D., DrPH, who has served as dean of the school since 2018, is retiring Sept. 30. A national search for the permanent dean is underway.

“Dr. McCormick has directed large-scale interdisciplinary initiatives and statewide community partnerships, including supporting long-term care facilities in Alabama during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Woodruff-Borden said. “She has contributed to the success of the School of Public Health for decades and is a respected educator and mentor.”

McCormick serves as senior associate dean for Academics and Practice in the School of Public Health and as a professor in the Department of Health Policy and Organization. This spring, she was named a University Professor at UAB in recognition of her impact across multiple disciplines.

She has served as principal investigator or contributed to major federally funded projects supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, and others. Her research interests include workforce development, emergency preparedness, disaster management, program evaluation and community-engaged public health practice. McCormick has developed innovative curricula in preparedness leadership, interprofessional simulation, hybrid learning and global public health education. In 2022, she was recognized with the UAB Provost Award for Faculty Excellence in Education Abroad.

McCormick is a two-time graduate of the School of Public Health, earning her Master of Public Health degree in 2000 and her Doctor of Public Health degree in 2010.
