A doctor and patient talk in a UAB clinic roomIn an effort to make health care more affordable for its workforce, UAB offers a Premium Assistance Program to help reduce healthcare costs for qualifying employees.

The program is designed to ease the cost of medical premiums for benefits-eligible employees whose total combined household income, based on family size, is at or below twice the federal poverty level (see table below). Participants who meet the criteria receive a discount equal to the lowest-cost single employee medical premium offered. Regular medical premiums remain tax-sheltered.

To apply, employees must submit a Premium Assistance Application along with proof of total annual household income based on their most recently filed federal tax return. Enrollment in the program is not automatic; employees must reapply each year to continue receiving the benefit.

The annual deadline for current employees is 60 days from Jan. 1, meaning applications for the 2026 program must be submitted by March 2, 2026.  Newly eligible employees, including those recently hired or newly enrolled in a UAB medical plan, have 60 days from their medical plan enrollment date to apply.

Employees can download the 2026 Premium Assistance Application and submit completed forms through the UAB for Me Portal.

To submit an application:

  • Log into the UAB for Me Benefits Portal at edu/hrintouch and visit the Premium Assistance page on the Benefit Resources menu.
  • Download and complete the Premium Assistance Application for 2026.
  • Visit the Document Center page on the Profile
  • Click on the +New Document button at the bottom of the page and upload your application when prompted.
  • In the Document Name box, type “Premium Assistance App” and in the Type of Document box, select “Other Document.” Then submit by clicking on the Save Document
