On April 10, 1999, UAB sponsored the inaugural Into the Streets volunteer day, with more than 300 students planting flowers and trees, painting houses and picking up litter around Birmingham and along the Cahaba River. Virginia Gauld, Ph.D., vice president for Student Affairs at the time (far left), joined students and Greek organizations for some urban farming.
This year’s Into the Streets, the university’s 21st, looked a bit different, thanks to COVID-19 — but it didn’t stop Blazers from working in the community. The socially distanced outdoor event, during which 84 students gave a combined 168 hours of their time at 12 sites around Birmingham working to clean up the banks of Valley Creek, packaging food boxes at the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, planting new growth at the Birmingham Botanical Garden and more, continued despite the pandemic.
