On June 7, 1970, UAB President Joseph Volker presented a diploma to one of UAB’s first graduates. During that first commencement, UAB awarded diplomas to 478 students during an evening ceremony. Ronald T. Acton received a doctorate in microbiology, becoming the first person to receive a degree from the university, and Volker received the first honorary degree.
This summer, commencement looks a bit different, due to the COVID-19 pandemic; it will be held virtually, just like the spring 2020 ceremonies, and UAB needs students’ help to make it memorable. Summer 2020 graduates are encouraged to send a short video, limited to 15 seconds or fewer, sharing their favorite UAB memories via Instagram DM @exploreuab or email to social@uab.edu by July 15 for inclusion in the virtual undergraduate and graduate ceremonies Aug. 14-15.
Interested graduates will also have the opportunity to walk in a future, in-person commencement ceremony.
