UAB’s Army ROTC program was established in September 1980 with 12 student cadets; the Color Guard is pictured here in 1989. Three years later, UAB was granted host-institution status and became home to the newest battalion of the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps.
The ROTC moved into a new 12,800-square-foot, $3 million training facility, located at 828 Eighth Court South, in April. It includes three classrooms, nine offices, a 1,860-square-foot auditorium, storm shelter, supply and storage space, a cadet lounge/library, a cadre lounge, women’s and men’s locker rooms, a gym and an engagement skills trainer room for simulated combat.
The facility’s formal grand opening is scheduled 1:30 p.m. Sept. 25.
