The AWARE Disability Management Program is celebrating Veterans Day all month long with events and programs to honor the armed forces and give back to those who served.
Pop-Up Poppy Stop
On Nov. 8, the AWARE Program’s Pop-Up Poppy Stop returns to share the origins of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance and hope, worn to honor service men and women who have fought and died for their country for more than a century. The UAB community is invited to stop by to get a free poppy pin they can wear to pay tribute to our veterans and armed forces.
The Pop-Up Poppy Stop will be set up from 8:30 to 10 a.m. in the Administration Building lobby, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Faculty Office Tower 2nd floor elevator lobby, and from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the Facilities Administration Building. A limited number of pins are available.
Undergarment drive
In honor of Veterans Day 2024, the AWARE Program also is hosting an undergarment drive to benefit the Phoenix Clinic at the Birmingham VA Medical Center. The Phoenix Clinic serves local veterans facing homeless and those leaving homelessness behind. New undergarments including undershirts, boxers and briefs, and new and gently used T-shirts of all sizes will be collected Nov. 11-Dec. 2 at locations across campus.
Wall of Messages to Our Vets
Also in November, members of the UAB community are invited to express their gratitude on UAB Human Resources’ Wall of Messages to Our Vets. Post a note of support, share a story or say thanks by visiting go.uab.edu/thankavet.
Veterans employed at UAB are encouraged to self-identify using the Veterans Self-ID Form in the Oracle HR & Finance System (log in through UAB's myUAB portal at my.uab.edu). Individuals may provide this information at any time during their employment with UAB. Submission is voluntary, and refusal to provide it will not result in any adverse treatment. The information is kept strictly confidential within UAB Human Resources and used only in compliance with federal reporting and record-keeping requirements.
