UAB Libraries will begin construction in late October on the new Pappas Historical Collections Gallery, a 3,000-square-foot space on the second floor of Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences that will house rotating thematic medical exhibits.
Construction is expected to last through the start of the spring 2024 semester. Some quiet study spaces on the south side of the second floor of Lister Hill will be affected during the construction process; in the interim, UAB Libraries is allocating additional space in Lister Hill to accommodate quiet study areas.
Interim study spaces
- First Floor Café Seating: The café-style seating on the first floor of Lister Hill by the Lister Hill Library 3D Printing Lab will be designated as a study space during gallery construction during regular library hours.
- LHL 162: This large multi-purpose room will house tables and chairs for use as a quiet study space during construction; it will be open during regular library hours..
- Ground Floor: The seating area inside the ground floor of Lister Hill will be a collaborative study space open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Tables and study carrels will be available.
- LHL 251A: Known as the Fletcher Room, this conference room will be available for silent study open 2-8 p.m. Sundays and 5-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday.
- Sterne Library 3rd Floor: The third floor of Mervyn Sterne Library serves as a year-round quiet study space for all Blazers.
Existing study spaces
The majority of Lister Hill Library’s study spaces will experience no interruptions during gallery construction, including all of the collaborative work spaces on the first floor and the 19 study rooms available for individual or group reservation. Some second-floor study spaces will remain open for use along the east and west sides of the building; however, some construction noise may be expected. Earplugs are available at no cost at the Lister Hill HUB Desk on the first floor.
