Three University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing graduate students have received scholarships from the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Foundation to further their nursing education in an effort to transform cancer care for patients throughout their lifespan.

She is one of the School’s five Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Future of Nursing Scholars and received a one-year, $7,500 award to support her research in pediatric oncology and the health and quality of life of childhood cancer survivors.
Cherven, who has 15 years of experience as a pediatric oncology nurse with a focus on survivors of childhood cancer, was selected to the 2016 cohort of RWJF Scholars and is currently one of 160 nurses nationwide receiving RWJF’s support to pursue their PhDs. Her mentor in the School is Associate Professor Wendy Landier, PhD, RN, a national leader in pediatric oncology nursing and chair of the Nursing Discipline of the Children’s Oncology Group, a worldwide consortium of 220 institutions that work together to improve outcomes for childhood cancer patients and their families by conducting clinical trials.

Kwai Mung Chin, BSN, RN, OCN, a student in the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Primary Care Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Specialty Track with an oncology subspecialty, has received a one-year, $5,000 ONS Foundation Masters Scholarship. Chin, a distance-accessible student from Boonville, Missouri, is a nurse in the infusion room at Missouri Cancer Associates in Columbia, Missouri. Walker is her mentor.
The ONS Foundation awarded a total of 42 scholarships for 2017-18.
