University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing Associate Professor and Interim Assistant Dean for Graduate Clinical Education-DNP Tedra Smith, DNP, CRNP, CPNP‐PC, CNE, CHSE (MSN 2004, DNP 2011), is one of 12 recipients of the 2024 UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. This annual award recognizes full-time faculty members across the university who have demonstrated excellent accomplishments in teaching. Individuals can be nominated by members of the student body, faculty or alumni.
Smith is noted for her innovative teaching methods and commitment to student success, contributing her broad and thorough knowledge to the School’s teaching mission. In her letters of nomination, she is commended for her dedication to mentoring and fostering a culture of lifelong learning and professional development among students. Through a Health Resources and Services Administrator grant, Smith collaborates with i3 Academy to provide health screenings and assessments to the community, taking nursing education beyond the classroom and providing experiential learning opportunities for students. She also has been a leader in the revision of the School’s curriculum and programs of study to align with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing new essentials.
"Receiving this award is a humbling experience. It reflects the collective efforts of my colleagues and students who inspire me every day,” Smith said. “This recognition highlights the importance of innovative teaching methods, dedication to student success and the value of experiential learning opportunities. I'm grateful for the chance to collaborate with my colleagues and the community while also contributing to the revision of our curriculum to better serve our students and community. This recognition also is a testament to the mission of our School to advance nursing education, promote well-being, and foster a culture of lifelong learning."
Smith serves on the National League of Nursing Board of Directors and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Simulation Committee. In 2023, she was recognized as the National Black Nurses Association Inc. Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year. She also is the recipient of the Cindajo Overton Outstanding Nurse Educator Award from the Alabama State Nurses Association and UAB School of Nursing Marie O’Koren Alumni Award for Innovation. She previously served as President of the Alabama League for Nursing and received the ALN Lamplighter Award in 2019.
