BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta has won the prestigious Maintaining the Flame Award in recognition of the chapter's activities during the 2008-09 academic year.

This award recognizes outstanding chapters that continue to demonstrate excellence in programming, communications and service after receiving the honor society's Order of the Torch Award, which the UAB chapter earned in 2008.

The UAB chapter was recognized for outreach efforts that included presenting student workshops on studying for exams, getting involved in campus activities and writing resumes.

The group also held canned food drives and participated in community outreach efforts such as Into the Streets, a national initiative that promotes civic engagement and service learning.

Alpha Lambda Delta, founded in 1924, is a national honor society that recognizes and encourages academic excellence among freshmen. Today Alpha Lambda Delta has 260 chapters across the United States with more than 850,000 student members.
