BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) chemistry major Elise Ottenfeld, 20, of Athens, has been awarded a scholarship to attend the prestigious Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD)-RISE summer internship program at Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany. She is the third UAB student to receive the award.

The DAAD-RISE internship is funded by the DAAD German Academic Exchange Program and is a fully funded six- to 12-week internship in Germany that includes accommodations and a stipend. Through DAAD-RISE, U.S. students in science and engineering are placed in top research labs to get a glimpse of advanced research work while gaining desirable practical experience in their field.

As a DAAD-RISE scholar, Ottenfeld will work with researchers in Germany to study protein interactions.

Ottenfeld is a student in the UAB University Honors Program. She recently conducted research under the direction of UAB Professor of Chemistry David E. Graves, Ph.D., on DNA-ligand interactions of several therapeutic cancer drugs and the conditions necessary for cancer invasion.

Ottenfeld plans to study clinical pharmacy after graduating from UAB. She is the daughter of Conrad and Lynn Ottenfeld of Farragut, Tenn.
