The University of Alabama Board of Trustees appointed two University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) faculty members as University Professors at its Feb. 6 meeting.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama Board of Trustees appointed two University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) faculty members as University Professors at its Feb. 6 meeting.

Jack E. Lemons, Ph.D., was appointed University Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics and Biomaterials, in the School of Dentistry, in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, in the Department of Surgery, in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering, in the School of Engineering. He started at UAB in 1968 as a part-time Assistant Professor of Engineering, then returned in 1971 as an Instructor and NIH fellow in the Medical Program, Department of Engineering Biophysics. He is recognized as a founder and developer of the field of biomaterials for surgical implants, which has led to 16 major awards of recognition.

Karlene K. Ball, Ph.D., was appointed University Professor in Developmental Psychology in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. She joined the UAB faculty in 1990 and is now the director of the Center for Research in Applied Gerontology at UAB. She is an internationally renowned expert on developmental change in cognition associated with aging, and has acquired numerous extramural research grants which total more than $25 million.
