UAB Magazine Wins National Recognition

For the third consecutive year, PMS poemmemoirstory, a national women’s literary journal published by the UAB Department of English, has received national recognition from The Best Creative Nonfiction anthology.

• Captures third "Best Creative Nonfiction" prize

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the third consecutive year, PMS poemmemoirstory, a national women's literary journal published by the UAB Department of English, has received national recognition from The Best Creative Nonfiction anthology.

The anthology, in its third volume, will republish a memoir by author Edwidge Danticat, "Uncle Moise," that appears in the 2008 edition of PMS poemmemoirstory. In addition, the anthology will include PMS in its "Where We Found the Best Creative Nonfiction" section.

The Best Creative Nonfiction anthology, which is published annually, features the best new writers, new ideas and approaches to creative nonfiction in literary journals, print and online 'zines, alternative newspapers and blogs. The anthology is edited by Lee Gutkind, who Vanity Fair magazine once called "the Godfather behind creative narrative nonfiction."

"This award continues PMS' national award-winning track record," said UAB instructor and PMS editor Tina M. Harris. Linda Frost, Ph.D., a former UAB associate professor of English, was the magazine's founding editor.

Memoirs published in past issues of PMS were selected for the 2007 and 2008 editions of The Best Creative Nonfiction anthology. Selections from PMS have also been republished in The Best American Essays and The Best American Poetry.
