BIRMINGHAM, AL — Mark Jeffreys, Ph.D., associate professor of English at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, was recently elected as a delegate to the Modern Language Association of America (MLA). His term is three years.

The MLA is a professional organization for teachers and scholars in the fields of language and literature. As a delegate, Jeffreys will represent colleges and universities in the southeast in the organization’s legislative body. He also has been a member of a special MLA committee on disability issues in the profession.

The MLA, which has more than 3,000 members in 100 countries, establishes guidelines in the profession regarding hiring, tenure and faculty governance. The organization also awards prestigious prizes for scholarly publication.

Jeffreys, who specializes in modern poetry, was the 1999 recipient of the Frederick W. Conner Prize in the History of Ideas.

He received his master’s degree in English from the University of Montana in 1987 and his doctorate from Emory University in 1990. Jeffreys has taught at UAB since 1992.
