BIRMINGHAM, AL — The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) chapter of the Student Alabama Education Association has been awarded the Outstanding Chapter Award for the state.

The award was presented recently at the annual spring conference of the Student Alabama Education Association in Orange Beach, Alabama. The Outstanding Chapter Award is based on the quantity and quality of activities represented in a chapter’s scrapbook. Activities for the 68-member UAB chapter included a fundraiser to support schooling costs for Rwandan orphans and a food drive for a local group home. They also read to children at Children’s Hospital during Read Across America Week. The UAB students’ activities scrapbook will be sent to Washington D.C. to compete for the National Education Association award later this spring.

In addition, four UAB students were elected to statewide office at the SAEA meeting. The winners include Judith Willis, of Centerpoint, second vice president and Alabama Education Association (AEA) delegate; Kelly Batchelor, of Sumiton, AEA delegate; Willie Everett, of Birmingham, (35212), Birmingham-area coordinator; and Africa Rox, of Southside, alternate AEA delegate.
