BIRMINGHAM, AL — The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is listed as having one of the best undergraduate philosophy department faculties in the nation, according to The Philosophical Gourmet Report, 2000-2001.

The Philosophical Gourmet Report ranks graduate philosophy programs in the English-speaking world. This is the first year that the Report has given special recognition to schools like UAB that don’t offer graduate or doctoral degrees in philosophy.

The UAB philosophy department was listed with schools such as California Institute of Technology, Dartmouth College, University of Vermont, University of Massachusetts at Boston, Mt. Holyoke College, Smith College, Barnard College, College of William & Mary, Oberlin College and Wesleyan University.

Professor George Graham, Ph.D., is chairman of the philosophy department at UAB. He credits several factors for contributing to UAB’s selection by the Philosophical Gourmet Report, including the quality of the philosophy department’s curriculum and its joint collaborations with programs in medicine, cognitive science and neurobiology.

“We also have an international reputation for the scholarship and research that takes place in our department,” said Graham. “The faculty has had numerous books published by the major presses.”
