BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Thomas H. And Jarman F. Lowder Foundation has pledged $2 million to create the Jarman F. Lowder Endowed Scholarship in Nursing. Jarman Lowder received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from UAB in 1973. Tom Lowder is President and CEO of Colonial Properties Trust.
“We know that so much of the good service in hospitals is derived from nurses, who are often the unsung heroes,” says Tom Lowder. “Nurses are responsible for a lot of patient care, and they’re generally underpaid and overworked.”
The Lowder Scholarship will allow students to receive a quality nursing education without the additional responsibilities associated with a full or part-time job.
“We are very grateful that one of our own graduates and her family are making it possible for future generations of nursing students to finance their education and to realize their dream of becoming a nurse,” says Rachel Booth, Ph.D., dean of the school. “This scholarship will be especially meaningful to those who are the recipients of the Lowder Family’s kindness and concern for students, nursing, and quality health care. This gift will touch many lives in perpetuity.”
UAB is in the midst of a five-year capital campaign. The original goal was $250 million, but that figure has already been surpassed. Campaign leaders now hope to raise $350 million. Funds will be used to create endowed chairs or professorships and 63 new endowed scholarships or fellowships. Other funds will support new programs, technologies, and learning initiatives.
