BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Medical/Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has received reaccreditation from the American Psychological Association, (APA).

An accreditation site visit from the American Psychological Association gave the clinical psychology program high marks for research and clinical training consistent with its scientist-practitioner training model.

“The reviewers [cited] the scientific productivity of our students in terms of papers presented and published,” said program director Jesse Milby, Ph.D. “They also reported that despite having more required courses than the typical program, the program graduates its students in slightly less time than the national average.

“This award reflects well on the university and the support we have received for the program,” Milby said. “It also reflects well on our faculty’s commitment to training excellence.”

The Medical/Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program was established in 1981 and has been APA accredited for 20 years. The program prepares students to engage in service delivery, research and instruction focused broadly on psychological factors in physical and mental health. Doctoral students receive intensive training in the psychological bases of behavior. A second level of training involves generic clinical professional skills, including assessment, intervention, consultation and evaluation.

The program now has nearly 30 students. Four students have internship positions at medical centers throughout the United States.
