BIRMINGHAM, AL — The short film “E=mc3,” directed by University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Professor Jean Bodon, Ph.D., and produced by Ken Jackson, president of Dudley C. Jackson Inc., a UAB alumnus and supporter, won the Golden Lion Award in the professional short narrative category at the fifth annual George Lindsey University of North Alabama (UNA) Television and Film Festival held April 18-21 in Florence.
“E=mc3” also won the Bronze Remi Award at the 35th annual WorldFest Houston International Film Festival held April 5-14 in Houston. The film was one of only 13 award winners in the short film category out of 1,600 entries. More than 4,300 entries were received in all categories from 30 nations. Worldfest is the oldest film festival in the world operating under the same continuous management.
In the film, Captain Zeno, a former astronaut, goes back in time to warn Albert Einstein about a fatal flaw in his theory of relativity. UAB Playwright-in-Residence Lee Eric Shackleford, M.F.A., wrote the screenplay. Karen Baird Scott, a part-time student at UAB, was executive producer. The film was shot in Birmingham and Huntsville. UAB assistant professor of performance, Dennis McLernon, M.F.A., M.Ed., played Captain Zeno. Bodon teaches introduction to cinema and television production classes in the UAB Department of Communication Studies. He has produced and directed films and documentaries shown on Home Box Office, Showtime, TNT and E! Movie Channel.
The film “E=mc3,” which debuted at the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival in Birmingham last fall, has been selected and shown in nine international film festivals, including festivals in Los Angeles, New Orleans and Fort Lauderdale.
