BIRMINGHAM, AL — Rebecca Watson has been named assistant vice president for alumni and annual giving at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
Watson, who had recently begun her term as president of the UAB National Alumni Society, has been active in that organization in a leadership capacity for more than 10 years, including service on the board of directors, as vice president for chapters and outreach, and as president-elect.
The Vincent native received a bachelor’s (1986) and master’s degrees (1988) from UAB. Since 1990 she has owned and operated Connections Inc., a Birmingham-based market research company.
“The engaged involvement of alumni is vital to the health and success of any university, and that’s certainly true of UAB,” said president Carol Z. Garrison. “A key goal in UAB’s strategic plan is to grow the rolls of active alumni and to establish more chapters both in-state and out-of-state. We look forward to accomplishing that goal with Becky Watson’s leadership.”
Shirley Salloway Kahn, vice president for development, alumni and external relations, noted that “Becky’s organization and marketing skills, her enthusiasm and her deep love for UAB make her well-suited to take our alumni society to the next level. We’re delighted that she has moved from being our lead volunteer to devoting full-time to this effort.”
Watson has been active in the American Marketing Association locally for the past 15 years, holding a number of leadership positions, including president. She received the chapter’s Morris Mayer Outstanding Member Award.
She is a member of the Birmingham Rotary Club, the Women’s Exchange and the Market Research Association and served on the board of directors of the Partnership Assistance to the Homeless (PATH). She was named to the Birmingham Business Journal’s “Top 40 Under 40” in 1998.
Watson assumes the alumni-related responsibilities of W. Sanders “Sandy” Murell, who retired at the end of 2003. Ricky Miskelley, a former president of UAB’s National Alumni Society, will resume that role and complete Watson’s term.
