BIRMINGHAM, AL — UAB philosopher Jennifer McKitrick, Ph.D., has received the Griffith Award presented annually by the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology.

McKitrick won the award for her paper titled “Extrinsic Dispositions” based on her doctoral thesis, which is in the field of metaphysics. The paper was presented in April at the annual meeting of the SSPP in Atlanta.

The Griffith prize is awarded to the authors of the best papers in philosophy and psychology. Applicants must be members of SSPP and either have received their doctorate no more than five years prior to the date of the annual meeting at which the paper is presented or they must be candidates for a doctorate degree. The Griffith Award carries a $200 cash prize.

The SSPP was founded in 1904. The organization promotes philosophy and psychology in the southern section of the United States by facilitating the exchange of ideas among those engaged in these fields of inquiry, by encouraging investigation, by fostering the educational function of philosophy and psychology, and by improving the academic status of the subjects.

McKitrick is an assistant professor in the UAB Department of Philosophy. She joined the department in 1999 after completing her doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
