BIRMINGHAM, AL — Mohammad A. Khaled, Ph.D., professor in the department of nutrition sciences in the School of Health Related Professions at UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham), has been awarded a fellowship from the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Khaled will work on developing a collaborative research project on H. pylori-induced inflammation and type-2 diabetes and heart disease in Asian Indians while in residence at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Sciences (INFS) at the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh later this year.

“Dr. Khaled’s work on exploring the relationship between inflammation and type-2 diabetes in Asian Indians will help improve the quality of life in this population, helping to meet the goals of the Fulbright program through international interactions and understanding,” says Dr. Timothy Garvey, M.D., chair of the department of nutrition sciences.

In addition to UAB and INFS, other institutions participating in the collaboration are the Cardiovascular Research Institutes (Dhaka), Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders, and the International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research in Bangladesh. This is Khaled's second Fulbright award.
