Barnette Named UAB Associate Dean
Jack Barnette, Ph.D., has been named senior associate dean for academic affairs for UAB’s School of Public Health. Prior to this appointment, he served as associate dean for education and student affairs at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. There, he also held positions as associate professor with the department of community and behavioral health, director of the school’s master of public health degree programs and director of the Center for Public Health Program Evaluation. Barnette received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in education from Ohio State University. In addition to the University of Iowa, schools where he has taught include Ohio State, Pennsylvania State, Western Michigan, University of Virginia, Memphis State, University of Mississippi and University of Alabama. He is the recipient of numerous honors, including the University of Virginia’s Phi Delta Kappa Service Award, the American Evaluation Association’s President’s Prize, the University of Alabama’s Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award, and being named a Fellow of the Big Ten’s Committee on Institutional Cooperation.
Galvin Named UAB Associate Dean
Melissa Galvin, Ph.D., has been named associate dean of external affairs for UAB’s School of Public Health. In this new position, she will assist faculty in understanding community organization, assist in implementing community-based projects and provide contact resources for investigators and community leaders. She will continue to serve as co-director of community affairs for the school’s Center for Health Promotion and as an associate professor in the school’s department of health behavior. She brings to the job more than 21 years community experience with an extensive background in administration and community organization. From 1999 to 2003 she served as executive director of the Alabama Department of Senior Services in Montgomery, Alabama, where she was responsible for all government senior service programs in the state. Prior to this, she served for more than 10 years as the associate director for UAB’s Center for Community Health Resources Development.
UAB Scientist Receives Prestigious Award
Guillermo Marqués, Ph.D., assistant professor of cell biology at UAB, has been named one of 15 of this year’s Pew Scholars in Biomedical Sciences by the Pew Charitable Trusts and the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). Funded by the trusts and administered through UCSF, the prestigious scholarship program provides each scientist a four-year, $240,000 award to help support his or her research. The program also provides an opportunity for the network of the scientists, who work in laboratories across the nation, to meet regularly to discuss ideas, challenges and obstacles across sub-specialties. Guillermo’s research specialty is developmental neurobiology. Specifically, his research focuses on gaining a better understanding of the communication between nerve cells and identifying the genes responsible for nerve growth in response to growth factors of the TGF-ß family.
