University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) junior Sarah Sheffield, 21, of Hoover, has been selected as the first recipient of a $1,000 Grace Lindsley Waits Scholarship, presented by the Department of English.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) junior Sarah Sheffield, 21, of Hoover, has been selected as the first recipient of a $1,000 Grace Lindsley Waits Scholarship, presented by the Department of English.

Sheffield, a native of Mobile, is pursuing dual degrees in English, with a concentration in literature, and political science. She has a 3.9 grade point average and plans to attend law school following graduation.

Sheffield is a member of Sigma Tau Delta English honor society, Golden Key Honor Society and is secretary of Alpha Lamda Delta honor society. She also is a member of the Young Democrats, UAB chapter.

Sheffield graduated from Murphy High School in 2000. She is the daughter of Robert and Mary Sheffield of Mobile.

Grace Lindsley Waits was an English teacher at Banks High School, which is now a middle school in Roebuck. The scholarship bearing her name was established in 2001 by William Doggett III, M.D., and other former Banks students to honor Waits.
