UAB Student Wins Scholarship to Study in China
University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) junior Wesley Ingram, 25, of Colorado Springs, has been awarded a $5,000 Freeman-ASIA Scholarship to study in Chengdou, China during spring semester 2005. Ingram plans to study the Chinese language at the intermediate level and Chinese history. He is majoring in international studies with a concentration in Asian studies. The Freeman-ASIA scholarship award is provided by the Freeman Foundation and is designed to encourage U.S. undergraduate students to study in Asia. Scholarship winners are expected to share their experiences with their home campuses when they return. Since the launch of the program in 2000, the Freeman-ASIA Award Program has supported more than 2,000 U.S. undergraduate students.
Student Donates $1,000 to UAB Department of Government
University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) senior David P. Whatley, 22, of Mountain Brook, has designated the UAB Department of Government as the recipient of a $1,000 donation from Vector Marketing Corp., a direct sales firm. Whatley was the top sales representative for Vector during the company’s spring campaign in 2003. As a result of this distinction, Whatley was able to designate a program of his choice to receive the $1,000 donation. Whatley is majoring in political science and history. He plans to attend law school following graduation.
Barton Receives Research Grant
University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) psychology doctoral student Benjamin K. Barton, M.S., of Birmingham, has received the 2004 American Psychological Foundation Lizette Peterson-Homer Memorial Injury Research Grant. The grant was established to support research on childhood injuries due to accidents, violence, abuse or suicide. Barton will receive a small stipend of $500 for his research proposal, “Children’s Self-Selection Into Risky Pedestrian Settings.”
