BIRMINGHAM, AL — Dr. Richard Allman has been selected by the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel to receive the 2003 Kosiak Award. The award was designed to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the prevention and/or management of pressure ulcers through their leadership in the areas of research, education and/or patient care. Allman received the award at the eighth National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel Conference February 21 in New Orleans.

Allman is the physician leader for the Alabama Quality Assurance Foundation’s Health Care Quality Improvement Program, which includes a statewide initiative to improve care for nursing home residents at-risk for or with pressure ulcers, chronic pain and walking difficulty. His current National Institutes of Health and VA-funded research program focuses on identifying ways to enhance mobility for older adults in the community and after hospitalization.

Allman is a professor of medicine and director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine, director of UAB’s Center for Aging, and director of the Birmingham/Atlanta VA Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC). In addition, Allman has served as a member and chair of the American Geriatric Society’s research committee.
