UAB Programmers Win Competition

A team of University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) undergraduates won first place at the Second Annual Intercollegiate Programming Competition Saturday, Feb. 3, in Hattiesburg, Miss. Posted on February 7, 2007 at 4:50 p.m.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A team of University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) undergraduates won first place at the Second Annual Intercollegiate Programming Competition Saturday, Feb. 3, in Hattiesburg, Miss. The contest, sponsored by BearingPoint Inc. and Microsoft, brought together 14 teams from Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana.

First-place team members are Matt Calderwood, a senior from Huntsville majoring in computer science; Jeffrey Frees, a sophomore from Pell City majoring in computer science; and Eric Frees, a freshman from Pell City majoring in computer science. The first prize was a Microsoft Xbox 360 for each team member.

Another UAB team of graduate students placed third in the competition and received a $100 Best Buy gift card for each team member. They are Matthew Curry, a Ph.D. student in computer science from Sylacauga; Clinton Curry, a Ph.D. student in mathematics from Sylacauga; and Ritu Arora, a Ph.D. student in computer science from New Delhi, India.
