BIRMINGHAM, AL — Ankit [Pronounced On-kit] Patel, 20, of Homewood, and Elizabeth Pham, [Pronounced Fam] 20, of Prattville, were named Mr. and Ms. UAB for 2005 during the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) homecoming game festivities Saturday, October 8, at Legion Field.
Patel is a junior majoring in biology and a student in the UAB Honors Program. He is a member of the Leadership and Service Council and Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and a former member of the UAB Ambassadors. He also has participated in Habitat for Humanity and Outreach Abroad. Patel is the son of Kanu and Vanita Patel.
Pham is a junior majoring in chemistry. She is a recipient of the National Alumni Society Joseph F. Volker Scholarship. Pham has been active on campus as a member of the Undergraduate Student Government Association, the UAB Ambassadors and the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. She also has been a volunteer with Hands on Birmingham and the Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis. She is the daughter of Joseph and Lan Pham.
The winners of the Mr. and Ms. UAB competition will each receive a $1,500 scholarship from the UAB National Alumni Society. They will work closely with the Alumni Society’s board of directors as student representatives to raise awareness of the organization’s Student Alumni Society, scholarship programs and events.
Stacy Cardwell, 23, of Trussville, a senior industrial distribution major, and Jonathan Cayce, 21, of Madison, a senior biomedical engineering major, were first alternates. The other participants were:

- Stephen Andrew Wright, 21, of Mountain Brook, senior, biology major
